On September 11 2001, terrorists took nearly 3,000 lives in the worst attack on our soil since Pearl Harbor. It was a day of unspeakable tragedy America can never forget, and it was also a day of hope and heroism. In our darkest hour, the sacrifice of our firefighters and first responders inspired our country and revealed the true character of America: generous, brave, and always prepared to serve the cause of righteousness.

On the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, we pay tribute to the civilians and first responders killed and move forward celebrating America in the spirit of patriotism.

Howell Fire District # 1 Dive Team Responds to Middletown Twp.

MIDDLETOWN — A body involved in a late-night boat crash on the Navesink River was found by authorities early this morning, and an Atlantic Highlands man who was piloting one of the boats has been charged with drunken driving. Police confirmed a body was found at about 8:45 a.m. following an intensive overnight search, state police spokesman Sgt. Brian Polite said.Authorities say a Boston Whaler with five people aboard and a Stingray powerboat with two people in it collided around 11:30 p.m. Saturday on the Navesink River in Middletown. The victim has been identified as Christopher Plante, 50, of Keansburg, said Polite. Plante was the owner of the Stingray, according to a family member.George Harrington, 39, of Atlantic Highlands, who was allegedly piloting the Boston Whaler, was arrested and charged Sunday morning by police with drunken driving. Police say all five people aboard the Whaler were ejected into the water, but eventually returned to the boat. The other person in the Stingray also went into the water but was able to return to the boat. The other people on the boats have yet to be identified by police. No other serious injuries were reported by authorities. Rescue crews spent several hours overnight looking for Plante. State police helicopters and rescue team divers participated in the search. Eventually, Plante’s body was located in the water through sonar by the Atlantic Highlands EMS, according to Bob Pfleger, spokesman for the Middletown EMS. “He was located at about dawn,’’ said Pfleger. Plante’s body was taken ashore by rescue workers at about 8:30 a.m., according to officials. A command station was set up at a home on Northover Place along the shore of the river during the operations. As of late Sunday morning, investigators remained at the scene. Polite said the official cause of death won’t be determined until a medical examiner’s report is finalized this week. Wreckage of the two vessels was towed to the Fair Haven Yacht Works on Sunday and then dispatched elsewhere. More than a dozen local emergency crews and fire departments were involved in the operation, said Pfleger. All four Middletown first aid squads were called to the scene as were emergency crews from nearby Atlantic Highlands, Highlands and Fair Haven. Dive teams from Red Bank and the Squankum Fire Company Dive Team from Howell also joined the search Pfleger said.

BRICK — A 49-year-old township woman now identified as Robin Hoffarth of North Riverside Drive, died after the kayak she was in capsized during a two-person late night trip Friday on the Manasquan River, said Capt. John E. Rein.
Hoffarth was one of two women, whose identities have not been released, both from North Riverside Drive, that went kayaking on the Manasquan River and capsized as was reported to police about 10:50 p.m. Friday, Rein said.
The 45-year-old second passenger and in the overturned kayak and neighbor of the drowning victim, was able to swim to shore where her husband notified police.
The survivor of the kayak told police they went kayaking earlier in the evening when it was still light out. For unknown reasons at this time, during the return home, the kayak capsized, Rein said.
Search teams including divers from the Brick Township Underwater Recovery Unit were assisted by Brielle, Manasquan and Squankum Dive Teams along with Herbertsville, Laurelton and Pioneer Hose fire companies, State Police Marine unit, helicopter and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Emergency responders were told that Hoffarth was missing from the overturned kayak and had been in the water about 10 minutes about 10:50 p.m., Rein said.
The kayak was found at 11:23 p.m. by fire department personnel about 200 yards offshore with no one around it.
Divers from Brick Township Underwater recovery entered the water at midnight found the womanabout 40 minutes later near the Manasquan River Yacht Club, Rein said.
The Ocean County Prosecutors Office and Medical Examiner’s Office also responded to the scene.
The New Jersey State Police Marine Bureau is leading the investigation into the drowning.
